FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello everyone,
Well, here we are in June and almost halfway through 2026 already! Yes, that also means it’s tax time again. Call me old-fashioned, but with all the negative news in the media lately, it is refreshing to read (usually with a coffee in hand) the variety of uplifting local stories in the Village Pump. While our community’s identity is shaped by its rural farming heritage, today it has grown into a vibrant mix of people with varied backgrounds, careers, life experiences and passions. If you have a positive story that you think might interest others – or even inspire some like-minded people into action – think about sharing it.
Samford Progress updates
Main and Junction Streets DA
Despite the welcomed Planning and Environment Court decision, members agree that a formal complaint should still be lodged with Council, as several key questions regarding the Council’s approach in this matter remain unanswered.
Council’s Planning Scheme Review
All locals are reminded that the Council’s New Planning Scheme early consultation survey online, closes on Sunday 12 July 2026. Everyone is encouraged to complete the survey. Go to https://yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/new-planning-scheme
Community Planning
Discussions are underway about how to build a shared community picture of the key priorities that residents want us to advocate for with Council and our government representatives.
Sustainability
Volunteers including ‘People for Nature’ and the Pine Rivers Catchment Association (PRCA) have undertaken extensive planting at Eco-Corridor, as well as having educational classes. Two community workshops were recently held for Effective Weed Control and the Circular Economy.
Citizen Science
Consideration is being given to holding a local ‘Citizen Science’ Expo event in Samford next year, as part of National Science Week In August 2027.
If any of these matters interest you, please feel free to contact us, or better still come along to our monthly meetings.
Did you Know?
There are laws restricting the types of fires (e.g. burn-offs) that can be lit in the open on private land. Part 4 (Division 2) of the Council’s Community Standards for Private Land 2023 outlines some clear mandatory requirements. For example, open fires on land that is 3,000m2 or larger are allowed, but must only be fuelled by clean and dry combustible material, excluding treated or painted timber, plastics, rubbish, paints, fabrics, petrol, oils, solvents or driftwood. Another requirement is that a responsible person must be in attendance at the fire at all times until the fire is extinguished. Owners are responsible for ensuring their fire does not cause a local annoyance or hazard. If unsure, check with your local Rural Fire Brigade. Numbers are on the inside pack page of this paper. Note, complaints should be made directly the Council or use the Snap Send Solve app.
Gentle reminder
If you are going to this year’s Samford Show (11 &12 July) please make sure you visit our Samford Progress and Village Pump stand and say gidday. We’d love to know your views on our community’s needs and priorities.
Until next month!
David Harrison (President)
